This is part of my three part post for using essential oils for children. I cover using essential oils for ADHD/ADD, Autism, Allergies. To be reader-friendly, these posts are short and straight to the point.
One of the most beneficial ways of treating ADD and ADHD without the use of drugs is by pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils [see what is meant by therapeutic grade EOs here]. A study conducted in 2001 by Dr. Terry Friedman compared the effects of lavender, vetiver, and cedarwood essential oils in improving focus and learning in ADD and ADHD kids.
“The American Medical Association Journal published a two year case study (1999-2001). Stating that Dr. Terry Friedmann M.D. found children who previously had been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD were administered therapeutic essential oils by inhalation that got noteworthy results. The essential oils used were Lavender, Cedarwood and Vetiver”
This is how Dr Friedmann used the oil; one was inhaled 3 times a day for 30 days. There was also a device used at bedtime to receive constant inhalation of the essential oil. Dr. Friedmann found by using the inhalation process with the oils, they demonstrated to help in settling the brain waves back into patterns that were considered normal. He also found that the children had improved in not only their school performance but also how they behaved.
Dr. Friedmann found a 53%
performance increase with Lavender, 83% performance increase with
Cedarwood, and 100% performance increase with Vetiver.
Essential oils work by oxygenating and enlivening the body’s cells, including those in the brain. They can help to clear the cell membranes of toxic chemicals that may be interfering with proper neurotransmitter and hormone balance. They can help to literally heal emotional traumas and clear emotional baggage that may be hindering children from thriving. It has even been postulated that certain essential oils may help to heal issues on the level of the DNA!
ADHD/ADD Protocol:
[1] Diffuse Peace & Calming morning and night. The Home Diffuser, which comes in the Premium Starter Kit and Basic Plus Kit, is perfect for everyday use. It requires filling distilled water up to the fill line and placing about 10-13 drops of the essential oil in the water. Then, you plug the cord into the wall, press the switch, and it will run for several hours.
[2] Next, layer Vetiver, Cedarwood, and Lavender under the big toe on each foot. Place a few drops of Vetiver along the spine and gently rub into it. It is also recommended to place a few drops of Cedarwood and Lavender behind the head and behind ears as well as on wrists. Vetiver may also be applied at the back of the head, but since the smell might be strong for little ones, it is usually placed on the bottoms of big toes. These three oils stimulate the limbic system of the brain which contains structures of the brain dealing with emotions, behaviors, and emotional association with memory.
[3] Morning and night, apply Valor (which contains Frankincense) and Peace & Calming on bottoms of feet and temples.
Because attention deficit disorder may be caused by mineral deficiencies in the diet, increasing nutrient intake and absorption of magnesium, potassium, and other trace minerals can also have a significant, beneficial effect in resolving ADD. [Essential Oils Pocket Reference]
Peace and Calming, Lavender, and Valor are three of TEN oils included in the Premium Starter Kit pack, along witht he Home Diffuser. This is a great way to get started on your own natural medicine cabinet at home! I have recommended it to all my friends and family and none of them have been disappointed. The look of excitement on their face when they order and receive their start kit is so contagious! The Premium Kit contains the most essential go-to oils for everyone, whether for yourself or your family.
One of the top things to remember when using essential oils to help support kids with ADHD/ADD is to take it slowly. It is helpful to make a list of what symptoms the child is battling and then to find the appropriate single oils or blends for aiding the child in that area. There are even more options in essential oils depending on the behaviors and symptoms.
